The Municipal House

The Municipal House

The Municipal House is the most significant Art Nouveau building that was built in the place of dormer King’s court – the seat of kings in the period of 1383 – 1485. King’s court was empty for several centuries, it was later used as a seminary, and then as a military school. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was tore down and replaced by the Municipal House (1905-1911). The building served as a cultural center with exhibition halls and a large concert hall. External façade is decorated wit stuccoworks and allegorical sculptures. The main facade features a large ceramic half-dome mosaic above the entry, Homage to Prague. Inside, there is the main Prague concert hall and the spirit of the whole building – the Smetana hall. Its ceiling is a glass dome and it is often used also for dancing. Interior of the Municipal house was decorated by famous Czech artists of that time, including Alfons Mucha. There is also a number of smaller halls, conference rooms, and offices but also cafes and restaurants where visitors can relax and enjoy the Art Nouveau decorations.

The Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge is the oldest bridge in Prague and it connects Old Town and Lesser Town. Its foundation stone was laid by Charles IV in 1357. The bridge is 516 meters long and 9.5 meters wide. It was built from sandstone blocks under the supervision of architect Petr Parléř. The bridge is decorated by 30 statues and statuaries, most of which were created in the period of 1706 - 1714.

Old Town Square

Old Town Square

Old Town Square and its buildings have witnessed much of the rich history of Prague. In the northern part of the square shines the white façade of the Baroque St.Nicholas Church. Its eastern part displays two beautiful examples of great architecture: Gothic house U Kamenného zvonu (By the Stone Bell) and a Golz-Kinsky Palace in Rococo style. The square is surrounded by facades in bright pastel colors. A line of colorful Romanesque or Gothic houses with magical house signs is located in the southern part of the square. The block of houses between Celetná and Železná streets is especially attractive. The square has always been a lively place. Now visitors can find a tourist information center here and there are also many restaurants, cafes, shops, and galleries.

Prague Castle

Prague Castle

Prague Castle is one of the most important cultural and historical places not only in Prague but also in the Czech Republic. There are many sites that have witnessed the long and rich history of the Czech lands. The most famous ones are: St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St.George’s Basilica, Golden Lane, Royal Summer Palace, etc. Origins of Prague Castle go back to the ninth century when it was started to be build by Premyslid Duke Bořivoj.

St.Nicolas Church in Lesser Town Square

St.Nicolas Church in Lesser Town Square

One of the Prague’s baroque gems is St.Nicolas Church in Lesser Town Square. This important baroque building with a cupola and bell tower has a richly decorated interior. When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart visited Prague, he played the pipe organ in this church. A watcher used to live in the tower and it was his responsibility to observe whether there is a fire in the town. During the communist regime, secret police used watchman’s room in the tower as their secret observatory. They could easily monitor entrances and gardens of western embassies from this spot. Bell tower was used for its original purpose until 1891. The tower has been managed as town property by Prague Information Service since 1992. It was opened for public and there is an exhibition about Prague choirs that had been put together by in cooperation with the National Museum.

Strahov Monastery

Strahov Monastery

Strahov Monastery was founded in 1140 by the Premonstratensians and with its vastness, it could compete with the seat of Czech kings. After a great fire in 1258, it was rebuilt in a Gothic style and later, some Baroque touches were added. Its wonderful library in the Theological hall and the Philosophical Hall is more than 800 years old. Despite being ransacked by soldiers of many invasive armies, it is still one of the best libraries in the Czech Republic. Strahov Monastery avoided the infamous abolishing of monasteries during the reign of Joseph II. in 1783 by changing the library into a research institute. There is a monastery and museum now.

Petřín

Petřín

The southern side of the hill was changed into a vineyard in the 12th century but these were turned into gardens and orchards in the 18th century. You can still find old apple and pear trees there. There are many paths for walking that offer beautiful views of Prague. The park is very popular in the spring when all the trees are blooming. Dominating feature of the hill is the 60 m high lookout tower that was constructed on the occasion of the General Land Exhibition in 1891. Its construction copies the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. There are 299 steps leading to the top of the tower and one’s reward after the hike is a fascinating view of the city.
